The Monzante Memorial Fundraising Challenge-Team Standardbredgal

Everyone knows that racehorses, when no longer able to compete on the track, can excel at alternate careers.  We see horses like G1 Winner, Lava Man, retire from racing, then return to the track to become a "pony horse". (He was lead pony for I'll Have Another in the Kentucky Derby & The Preakness in 2012).  Some, however, are not so fortunate.  Being shuffled from owner to owner, from trainer to trainer, while constantly collecting a paycheck, the overall well-being of the horse is often overlooked.

Here in Ontario, Canada, I cannot tell you the amount of calls that I've received from standardbred horse owners and trainers that try and do the right thing by rehoming their horse that can no longer race.  Sadly, there are not enough facilities or funding to accommodate them.  Is this why some owners and trainers race their horses when they know they shouldn't --- is there an extreme "sensitivity" chip missing in their methodologies?  How many track vets "turn the other way" when determining if a horse is fit to race?  How many racetracks have unenforced rules and regulations, or for that matter, virtually zero rules and regulations for racing sound?  How many look at them as "commodities"?

So, for horses like Monzante-Wake At Noon-And all those who should retire with dignity-This is for you:

Danonymous Racing, as well as others, have spear-headed a fundraising challenge, and I have decided to represent The Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society, here are the particulars:

As per Danonymousracing.com

Announcement: In the wake of the tragic death of former graded stakes winner, Monzante (who broke down in a $4K claiming race over the weekend, see Paulick Report story here), we are announcing the Monzante Memorial Fundraising Challenge.

The team that raises the most money between now and August 1, 2013, will win the fundraising challenge and receive a reward. The reward is still to be determined. We just needed to get this process started now while there’s still outrage over this untimely and unnecessary death.
